Heather O'Neil

Realism artist, Heather O'Neil, clearly portrays the unique likeness of each subject through the use of soft pastels. Her art is based on her collection of photographs taken during her extensive travels in Africa, Europe, South and Central America, and within the United States.

O'Neil's creative process begins by capturing spontaneous moments through the lens of her camera. Each image becomes a moment in time, leaving the viewer to create their own story. O'Neil renders the image in black and white, preserving its timeless quality.

Utilizing a large-scale, white background and strategically placing the singular subject, O'Neil attracts the viewer's eye to focus without distraction. The monochromatic subject emerges after multiple layers of pastel are applied, creating a rich, lifelike image.

Dubuque Artist, Heather O'Neil, works from her own photography to create timeless portraits in black and white.  To many people, her works appear to be charcoal portraits, but O'Neil finds soft pastel to be her preferred choice.  In contrast to works in charcoal which can appear "muddy", her soft pastel portraits have a smooth, clean appearance with contrasting of shades of a truly black medium against the white background.
