Ordering a Commissioned Portrait

All artwork is based on photographs.  The photograph can be a snapshot or high resolution digital image.  The quality of the finished work is dependent on the clarity of your photograph.

The most important quality in accurate portrait is the subject's eyes, which reveals the subject's personality. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that your photograph shows clear eye detail to help us best capture your subject's personality.

I am located in Dubuque, Iowa.  If you live in the Dubuque area, I'm available to take photographs of the art subject.

It is important to note that your imagination and creativity are inspiring this original creation - the more direction you can provide, the better we can develop your vision. Your options are virtually limitless for the theme or subject matter of your picture -- select a custom-created artwork of wildlife, landscape, seascape, still life, and portraits of both people and pets.

I personally guarantee all my artwork, both in material quality and character likeness, within the parameters set by the photographic reference supplied. In the case of an image requiring consultation in its final stages, a photo will be taken and either sent to you over the internet or by mail, to ensure your total satisfaction prior to sending the original artwork by courier.

All artistic rendering is completed using high quality soft pastels on archival paper to ensure that the quality of your work will not decrease over time.

By commissioning a picture, you have agreed to the RELEASE AGREEMENT. (below)

Release Agreement

By commissioning a portrait, you are agreeing to give the artist, Heather O'Neil, the irrevocable right to use your name (or any fictional name), picture, portrait, or photograph in all forms and media and in all manners, including composite or distorted representations, for advertising, trade, or any other lawful purposes, and you waive any right to inspect or approve the finished version(s), including written copy that may be created in connection therewith.

Pricing of Your Order

The final artwork can be any size (larger works can be quoted but may be limited due to availability of materials). Certain subject matter will dictate a size that will work best, but this is your inspiration - you probably have a particular space in mind for its display. Once I receive the photograph of the subject matter, I will make a recommendation if I believe that a different size would better serve your subject matter and composition. Keep in mind that framing will add dimension to the overall size.

The price of commissioned works start at $200.  Commission prices are individually based on the complexity of the theme or subject matter and the finished size and selected.  All artwork is estimated upon receipt of your order and the photograph that you send as the basis of your artwork.  Once the commissioned price is agreed upon, a commencement fee of 50% of the total commission is required as a deposit.

If you live in the Dubuque area, your artwork will be available for pickup in approximately 8 -10 weeks.

Shipping:

Packaging/handling and ground delivery shipping costs will be included with the commission estimate. All artwork is safely packaged and insured for safe delivery to your destination. Standard ground delivery is via UPS.  Overnight shipping options are available and can be quoted upon request.

The finished picture will be sent to you in 8-10 weeks.

Dubuque Artist, Heather O'Neil, works from her own photography to create timeless portraits in black and white.  To many people, her works appear to be charcoal portraits, but O'Neil finds soft pastel to be her preferred choice.  In contrast to works in charcoal which can appear "muddy", her soft pastel portraits have a smooth, clean appearance with contrasting of shades of a truly black medium against the white background.
