Face of Congo

Congo Girl I received the First Place Award in the 2009 Biennial Juried Exhibition at the Dubuque Museum of Art.

Juror's Statement -- "As a gallery owner, I tend to look for art that will sell. As a juror of an art exhibition I try to find out about the artist through their imagery.  I looked for technical mechanics and true passion to select the winners, which wasn't an easy task..." Michael Gerber, Gruen Galleries, Chicago

Congo Girl II and Congo Boy I received Special Recognition in the Upstream People Gallery's 12th Annual Faces Juried Online International Art Exhibition

Juror's Statement -- "Heather O'Neil of Dubuque, Iowa is another expert in her use of soft pastel. Her works with the people of the Congo is wonderful indeed. “Congo Boy I” and “Congo Girl II” is powerful with the strong value contrast and the delicate depiction of the hair."  Laurence Bradshaw, Curator, Professor of Art

Dubuque Artist, Heather O'Neil, works from her own photography to create timeless portraits in black and white.  To many people, her works appear to be charcoal portraits, but O'Neil finds soft pastel to be her preferred choice.  In contrast to works in charcoal which can appear "muddy", her soft pastel portraits have a smooth, clean appearance with contrasting of shades of a truly black medium against the white background.
